excerpt

“What you see from the road doesn’t come close to doing it justice.” I nudge Ryan. “Right, babe?”
He startles. “Huh?”
“I was just telling Rebecca and Joe the view from the road doesn’t do it justice.”
He shakes his head. “She’s right.” He smirks. “The woman’s always right.”
Joe’s eyes scrutinize me furtively. “Not always.”
I try to swallow, but my mouth is parched once again. “I’m gonna have one last drink before we go. Some wine to warm my veins against the cold.” Reaching down, I pick up the nearly empty bottle. “I’d offer some to y’all, but looks like Gabby and I have about finished this one.” I salute Ryan, then Joe, and ignore Rebecca. “Bottoms up.”
Joe blinks, but holds his lids closed a little longer than usual. His legs, which are touching mine, tense before he snatches the bottle. “I think you’ve had enough.”
“I’m not drunk, and seriously, what do you care?” I puff my chest out at him. I’m sick of him acting like he’s my babysitter tonight. I peek past him at Rebecca. “How do you handle his bossiness?”
She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “I guess he feels like you’re his little sister, and he’s just trying to protect you.” She winks at me, and I want to slap her. No. I don’t. Because I’m not an aggressive drunk, and I’m not even all that loopy anymore. I’m not my father. Maybe Joe’s right. Maybe I’ve had enough. “Anyway,” she says. “He seems to prefer me bossing him around, if you know what I mean.” Maybe me wanting to slap her has nothing to do with the fact I’ve been drinking and everything to do with her being a bitch?
Joe’s head whips back to her. “Really?” Thoughts of when Joe mentioned dropping to his knees and begging me not to move pop into my mind. Maybe he likes being on his knees. Everything in me tries to contain the smile that wants to curve on my lips and the giggles that want to fall out of them.
Ryan bursts into laughter. “So, you’re a dominatrix, Rebecca?”
“I guess you could say that.” Her tone has changed. It’s not as perky, warm. “See, there was this guy in college I screwed around with. Everything was always on his terms and never mine. He treated me great in private, and like I was a piece of trash in public.” Did she date my sister’s ex too? Because I swear she’s describing Ian, but he’s a good bit younger than her. They wouldn’t have been at Tech during the same time. My head twists between the two of them.
“Maybe he liked you, but didn’t know how to show it. Maybe he was afraid. Maybe it was bad timing for a relationship.”
Sometimes Ryan can be a complete idiot, and I’m ashamed of what comes out of his mouth. I interject, “So bad timing for a relationship gives the douche permission to treat her like trash?” Even if I’m not her biggest fan, hearing her story is like listening to my Gabby’s. It’s too personal. The fact Ryan is even attempting to defend such horrible behavior appalls me. “Last time I checked, the answer is no.”
“Exactly. Thank you, Sam. Anyway, he made me realize the best way to protect my heart was to control every aspect. So, I guess you could say I’m a dominatrix if you want. I’m not really into my men having to be beaten into submission to have sex with me, though.”
She cuts her eyes at Joe, who has his head down. I hear him mumble something, but can’t make out the words. He’s rubbing his palms on his pants. Why is he letting her say all this? “Anyway, I prefer my men begging for me, but I need the control. First rule is in order to have sex with me, you have to court me.”
Ryan bellows. “So. Let me get this straight. You’re either saying my little brother lets you control him? Or…”

Blog Tour: FALLING FOR HUDSON by Alexandria Bishop

Title: Falling for Hudson (Marlowe #2)

Author: Alexandria Bishop

Release Date: Dec 22, 2015

Find on Goodreads

Orphaned and alone, Chloe Weston is forced to leave everything she knows and start over with nothing more than a shattered heart.  But it isn't long until the Hartley boys–both of them–begin to mend the broken pieces.  Kind, loving, and reliable Hudson Hartley would move mountains to see her smile.  On the contrary, fun, sexy, bad boy, Jax Hartley, only wants to help her forget about her pain. Filling the void in Chloe's life, the brothers vie for her attention--and heart.  But only one can have her...

Hudson

Down in the kitchen, I find Jax, luckily alone. He never cared about flaunting his latest conquests around, but since Chloe has been staying here, I haven’t seen a single one. I’m extremely grateful, and I wonder if he even knows he’s doing it. “Hey man, what are you doing up so early?”

Looking up from his overflowing bowl of Cap’n Crunch, he says, “Chloe isn’t exactly a quiet crier. But I’m used to it at this point. I don’t have anywhere to be, so I can just sleep all day.”

“Sorry about that. I think it’s just hitting her a little harder today. Stuff like your first day of senior year is important to girls like Chloe. It’s the first major life moment that her parents are missing.”

“I get it, dude. I haven’t said anything because she’s going through shit right now. I’m not a major asshole, or at least I try not to always be.”

Oddly enough, I think that’s the first normal conversation we’ve had in a long time. The Hartley brothers don’t have heart-to-hearts, as funny as that sounds. Honestly, if it weren’t for the band, I don’t think we’d be as close as we are. That’s about all we have in common. The silence drags on, and although it isn’t uncomfortable for me, Jax can never have it be silent for too long. He always has to fill the silence in some way.

One night when I was watching TV, Jax came in, and just like any older brother he took the remote and changed the channel. I thought about arguing, but I was too exhausted and went with it. Five minutes after he found something, I could hear mumbling. I looked over and his mouth was moving. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, dude. I’m not doing anything. What are you doing?”

“Yes you are. Wait…are you saying all of the lines?”

“No. Why would I do that? That’s weird.”

After another five minutes, he started up again. He was oblivious to the fact he was doing it, or he couldn’t hold out any longer. Either way, it was some pretty funny shit.

“Do you think the Flash can turn his dick into a human vibrator during sex?”

And there it is. What the fuck? I stare at him incredulously. “Where do you come up with this shit?”

He holds up his juice glass, and I notice it’s adorned with the members of the Justice League. “C’mon, just think about it.”

I shake my head. “I don’t know. I guess that makes sense.”

“Dude, that would be awesome.”

I can’t believe we’re even having this conversation right now. “Just don’t tell the ladies your theory.”

“Why not?”

“Because then they’d be disappointed in your lack of vibrating abilities.”

“Trust me, brother, no chick has ever left my bed disappointed.”

“Dude, I don’t want to know how any girl feels leaving your bed. That’s between you and whoever your latest hookup is.” He opens his mouth to say something, but Chloe walks in the room and he shuts it right back up. I don’t know what was going on between Chloe and Jax over the summer, but it stopped after that night. The two of them don’t even talk to each other anymore. Or more like Jax doesn’t talk to Chloe. I think he feels responsible for the accident, but I’ve told him time and again it wasn’t his fault.

 REVIEW

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would describe it as a new adult book, but can be enjoyed by all!! Chloe is a young adult who has gone through more than most her age but despite bumps in the road she tries to be strong and independent. Hudson is almost like her knight in shining armour. He looks after her as a friend. Will he break down her walls, you will have to read and find out. I absolutely adored the scenes in the school theatre - funny, romantic and just wonderful! I happily award this book 4 stars!!

When I imagine Hell, it's this town in the summer months, good old Palm Springs, California. Hotter than the devil's breath and twice as dry. I couldn't think of anything worse than putting on a suit in this heat, even if I had one. Since I'm not even sure why he called me to his office, I show up in my board shorts and T-shirt. If he wants to see me for some mysterious purpose he wouldn't divulge over the phone, he can take me as I am.

We never have had the money you need to get by in a town like this. My parents came here when they were young, to find work. My father, an airline mechanic, was underpaid and passed away before he could really save anything. We survive, but I wish I could do more. I couldn’t ask for a kinder mother, she looks at everything with a positive eye and sees the beauty of what’s beneath it even if it’s sugarcoated shit. She deserves the best.

The future right now seems bleak, no money for college, my job at the hotel is just enough to keep my mother and me with a roof over our heads and food on the table.

My foot pounding the pavement as I push my skateboard faster through the desert streets reminds me, I can’t even afford a car. I shake my head at the thought, flip my board up and catch it quickly and wipe my hands on my shorts as I go into the building.

Skye is sitting behind the desk and her face goes from miserable to lit up at the sight of me. Fuck, I want her so much. She deserves the best too and that’s more than I can give her. Just look at where she comes from, I can't keep up with that. My mother, an immigrant right off the boat, could never hope to make a decent wage. Graduation is nearing, and I don't know what I'm going to do. I can’t make a life with Skye in my parents trailer, their first and only home that my mom and I still share.

I slyly look around, seeing we’re alone. I sneak around the desk and drop to my knees in front of her.

“Get up! He’ll see you,” she says in an urgent whisper.

I give her my crooked grin, slide my hand up her skirt and rest it on her upper thigh. Her eyes get brighter as she looks around the room, recklessly I put my other hand in her curly hair and pull her head down to mine.

“Kiss me,” I tell her a breath away from her full, succulent lips.

I don’t wait, I take her lips in a hurried kiss. Just as she starts to melt for me, I pull back and love the glazed look that’s in her eyes. I playfully tap her on the nose. “We’ll finish this later,” I tell her, moving my hand up to grasp her panties. She gasps as I pull and the fabric tears easily, leaving me with her panties fisted in my hand. I give her another smile and bring them to my nose as I stand.

“You’re so gross! Give them back.” Her words the complete opposite to the smoldering look she’s giving me.

“Nope, you’ll get them later.” I give her my killer smile.

She shakes her head at me. “Why are you here?” Again she looks around the room waiting for him to appear.

“Don’t worry, he won’t chase me off, he asked me to come in.” I smile at her and puff out my chest as I mimic his voice. “I’d like to meet with you, Kid, about some business.”

Usually when I make fun of him she breaks out into a fit of giggles, not this time, her face falls. “Don’t get mixed up with him, you know he is shady as all hell.”

I grab her by the shoulders, she's showing signs of one of her panic attacks. “Don’t worry, Skye, whatever game he’s playing, I’m sure I can handle it.” She starts shaking her head.

“No Preston, don’t play any of his games, you don’t have the cheat codes.” There's worry written all over her face.

I pull her in close, wrapping my arms around her and look down at her upturned face. I smile, then give her forehead a quick kiss. “It’ll be okay, Detka.” I only use that nickname when I want her to smile, it’s my special name for her. As soon as the word is out, her smile brightens the room.

Someone clears their throat behind us, damn busted. I release her and turn around plastering a smile on my face, only to see he has his everlasting frown of disapproval on his. “Hello, Mr. Divine, nice to see you,” I greet him. I can feel her fist the back of my shirt, and I put a hand behind me to squeeze it, reassuring her.

“Hello, Kid, let’s go in my office.” He glances at Skye then walks into his office before me.

Once he has his back to me, I follow waddling like him and quickly turn back and blow Skye a teasing kiss before shutting the door.

I am suddenly nervous. I know he doesn’t approve of me and I really don’t care, I’ve just heard he’s a crooked player, and I don’t know what he wants with me. I wipe my hands on my shorts again, hoping my nervous gesture will go unnoticed.

“What are your plans for the future?” he begins abruptly.

“Uhhh… like college?” I stutter, running my hand through my hair.

He leans on his desk moving forward slightly. “College? A job? My daughter?”

I open my mouth, attempting to speak and then I close it again. I’ve got nothing. I don’t have any plans for a single one of them, I know I should, but I don’t, so I stare blankly at him.

“That’s what I thought.” He gives me a look of disgust. I should be used to it since he wears it whenever I’m around. Sitting back in his chair he studies me for a minute. “I have a job for you.”

I’m at a loss for words, especially since I know he doesn’t care for me.

“You speak Russian right?” he asks with a calculating gleam in his eyes.

“Yeah, why?”

“I have some business I need taken care of in Russia, I need a man on the ground.”

“Trying to get rid of me, Bob?” I know he doesn’t like the fact that his daughter and I are so close.

“No, little asshole, I’m trying to help you become something other than the desert rat you are now.” He pounds the desk with his fist.

He says that like it’s an insult, but when you’re a desert rat, you embrace it, wear the title with pride. I don’t have to listen to this shit, so I get up and without a word, head back towards his office door. But as my hand makes contact with the door handle, his words stop me cold.

“I can promise you enough money to get your mother out of that trailer and keep my daughter happy.” His tone is smug.

I grip the door handle, taking a deep, calming breath. He knew exactly what to say to get me to stop, and I turn to look at him with hope in my eyes.

“That’s what I thought,” he sneers in satisfaction when I do, then motions for me to sit back down.

He has me by the balls right now, how can I refuse? I sit down to listen to what he has to say, I mean shit what do I have to lose?

 Review

I enjoyed this book a lot. It filled me with intrigue and mystery. Skye and Preston have a cute relationship and I hope Skye's Father doesn't cause them too many problems. This book is a novella so flows  quickly. I hope I don't have a long wait for the next book. - 4 stars!!!
