The One You Feed Blog Tour

Title: The One You Feed

Author: James Drummond

Genre: YA Horror
Like most kids who grew up in the small Oregon town of Silver Falls, Toby Hoffman had heard all the scary stories about the monsters living in the neighboring woods of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Now a teenager, he knows the stories are made up to keep the town’s children from wandering where they aren’t wanted.

Then his best friend, Nate, wakes up covered in blood in the reservation woods, with no recollection of whose blood it is or where it came from. When even more brutal attacks follow, Toby can’t help but wonder if one of the fables he was told as a child might be true. With the help of Rachel, a determined Native American girl who has moved off the reservation and into the house next door, he begins searching for an explanation for the recent carnage. He also develops feelings for his new neighbor, which are put to the test when he and Rachel discover that her uncle may be responsible for the emergence of a legendary monster that does in fact exist.

To make matters worse, there’s evidence that Nate was turned by the beast, and that he has every intention of holding onto his extraordinary new creature capabilities no matter the cost. In order to save Silver Falls from a true scary story, Toby will have to face off against forces he doesn’t fully understand – and his closest friend.

Excerpt:

He caught only a glimpse of the intruder out of the corner of his eye as the animal struck. It was powerful, whatever it was. The creature’s blow knocked the hog farmer off his feet and sent him sailing across the stable. As he tumbled to the ground, Henry felt a sharp pain shoot up his left side. At first, he thought it was strictly the result of a hard landing, but when he brought his hand to his ribs, he discovered his jacket and shirt had been torn open by the animal’s strike. And although he couldn’t make out anything in the darkness, his fingers were now covered in a sticky wetness Henry could only assume was his own blood.

He spotted his flashlight laying several feet away and considered scrambling for it. Then, out of the shadows at the far end of the stable, appeared two glowing yellow eyes. They were all Henry could see of the creature that had attacked him. They were all he wanted to see.

No longer caring about the flashlight, he rolled onto his hands and knees and began crawling for the door, adrenaline overtaking any pain. After a yard or two, he lurched onto his feet. The ache in his side returned with the effort, and his hand instinctively went back to the wound. His clothes were now soaked with blood.

Henry heard the patter of the animal’s footfalls on the dirt floor behind him, just prior to feeling its teeth gliding through his calf. The beast’s jaw clamped down like a bench vise. The predator then yanked him back, and before he’d even really registered the attack, Henry found himself soaring though the air again. He hit the ground hard, skidding across hay and manure until he came to rest beside the opening the massive beast had created in the stable wall.

He had to get through that opening. Maybe this thing had decided to claim Henry’s stable as its own and was simply defending it. If he could just pull himself through that hole and out into the pen, maybe he’d be safe. He reached out and grabbed at the splintered wood with his bloody hands, his muscles straining as he pulled himself through the breach.

Review:
The character of teenage characters of the “The One You Feed”, in particular, Toby came across in a pretty realistic manner and the author, James Drummond, did a very good job of showing the internal struggles the misfits of the high school dealt with on a regular basis.  Then the supernatural aspect of the story comes into play with brutal murders that appear to be the work of a mysterious beast that are part legend and part ghost story originating from the neighboring Umatilla Indian Reservation.

Now, parts of storyline paralleled similar horror movies with the same supernatural creatures…however, the Native American aspect added a unique and original perspective that I really enjoyed and added so much more depth to the “The One You Feed” that was quite the unexpected but, pleasant surprise.  I’m not sure if I was horrified in as much as “scared” while reading the story, I will warn you though… the fight/attack scenes were very detailed and…well, I guess I’d described them as “gory”.  So, that being said, I still really enjoyed “The One You Feed” and was quite impressed with James Drummond’s ability to keep the reading engaged in a story about a classic supernatural “monster” with an original twist.

Review- 3.5 stars
Ok, first let me just say there are some things I liked about this book and then some things I didn’t.  But it was mostly wonderful!  Who doesn’t love a cowboy in some Wranglers *raises hand and jumps up and down*.  I know I sure do!  A man who is built just right and you know he didn’t get that way from working out in a gym.  He’s a man’s man who knows how to work the land and work it right!  The cowboy hats and boots don’t hurt either ;)
So enough about the cowboys... for now. Our two main characters in this book are Clint, the hot cowboy, and Rachel, the city girl who finds herself smack dab in the middle of nowhere.  Rachel is running from her past and meets Clint in a diner one night.  So, here is one part that I had a few issues with, not major, it just kinda bothered me a little.  In the synopsis of the book, it says-
From the moment they lay their eyes on each other, sparks fly.... It's not long before they give into their attraction and settle into life together on the ranch. They find happiness in each other's arms and Clint quickly wonders if Rachel is the girl that can give him his happily ever after.”
Ok... I know attractions happen fast, and especially in books, but this one was literally as it says “It’s not long before they give into their attraction...”. The not long in this case was 1 night.  I would have liked to have seen them resist each other a little more, build up a little more sexual tension, or have their relationship build up a little more before they gave into their attraction.  Don’t get me wrong, it was still VERY HOT when they did J
Once they give into their attraction of each other they slowly settle into day to day life together on the ranch, falling more and more for each other as the days go by.  But Rachel still can’t shake the feeling that she needs to look over her shoulder and that her past is going to come back for her.  Her past does come back for her and she and Clint have to decide can they overcome it together or will she run from this just like she has everything else.
Now, my next issue with the story is hard to put into words without giving away the story and spoiling it.  But I’ll just put it this way, I feel like a big chunk of the story was missing in one place.  I wished I could have been able to read the character’s reactions instead of jumping ahead 2 or 3 days later and being hit with the news and all the characters are suddenly fine with it.  Just felt like something was missing for me.
As for everything else, I liked it.  I loved all the other supporting characters and can’t wait for their stories.  Especially Wyatt!  Woohoo!  That is one hot cowboy!  If you’re looking for a fun, quick, fast paced read, then this is the book for you.  Go jump into the world of hot cowboys and enjoy J ~Lauren

No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when the stunning Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Excerpt
My arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her to where her toes barely touched the ground. My hands began to roam lower, and I knew if we didn't stop, I was going to end up taking her right there on the mat like our first time. The problem was that there were still people in the gym, unlike before when we were the only two there.
Breaking away, I set my forehead against hers as I said, “If we don't stop, I'm going to take you right here, right now.”
Reconnecting our lips, she whimpered with desire, “I need you.”
Fuck me. There was no way that I could say no to that. Picking her up, her legs wrapped around my waist as our mouths collided. I walked towards the door before fumbling with the handle and locking it, then headed to the closet.
Kicking the door closed, I maneuvered around most of the boxes and equipment inside before positioning us against one of the bags that lined the walls. No one should find us, unless one of the other employees happened to come in for some reason, but I really didn't give a fuck at the moment—I had to have her.
As I moved her shorts and panties to the side, she grabbed my cock and pulled it out, eager for me to enter her. Guiding me to her, her hands placed my head at her opening, which was already wet with her arousal for me.
Slowly, I pushed myself inside her, gradually filling her until her pussy surrounded my length. We groaned in unison as I began to roughly pound her against the bag, grasping her hips for deeper penetration.
My mouth found Kaiya's neck as she continuously moaned, her cries of pleasure becoming louder and louder with each of my thrusts. Savoring her skin, I began to push her shirt up, needing to feel her flesh against mine. Kaiya maneuvered to help me remove her top before taking off her sports bra, letting it fall to floor.
My shirt was added to the pile as Kaiya eagerly pulled it off. Her hands roamed over my shoulders and arms as my mouth claimed her breast, my tongue ring flicking over her hardened nipple. She arched against me as I moved to her other tit, sucking it deep into my mouth.
Wrapping her legs tighter around me, she forced my dick deeper inside her sex. Growling my approval, I thrust harder as her nails dug into my biceps and her head tipped back against the bag.
“Ryker?” a voice called out from outside the door. Shit.

Excerpt
I finally reach the end and sit, placing my legs over the side, but because
of my height they do not reach the water. The night begins to replay through my
thoughts. I can't believe everything I've worked so hard for is crashing down
around me. Being squad captain of one of the top 5 squads in the country
guaranteed me a spot on almost any college in the country. Even if this Hicksville
town, Mississippi has a cheer leading squad, will they even have room for
another cheerleader? Do they even compete? Now, I'm going to have to work
harder just to get a tryout at the colleges I'm interested in.
Why would my parents just pick up and move us when I have one year of
high school left? How do they expect me to just leave everything I know behind
and start over? I have friends here, family, that has to mean something to them.
This isn't fair. Maybe I can think of a way to stay behind. I just have to. My
parents have got to understand what this will do to me. I just want to wake up
and realize this is all a dream. All I can do is stare out at the ocean, lost in
thought.
All of my emotions finally catch up to me and the tears start to fall, heavier
this time. I can't stop them anymore. I don't know what to do. Everything was
going great in my life and now the misery is about to begin. I don't even try to
wipe the tears away anymore, I just let them flow. I don't understand out of all the
states in the continental U.S., why my parents have to choose some po-dunk
town in Mississippi. I can't imagine the kind of people that reside there. After that
big hurricane, Katrina I think, they had people walking around barefooted and
missing teeth. Do they even have shopping malls and designer clothes, I wonder,
or is it full of trailer parks and cow fields. My stomach turns at the thought.
I'm not sure how long I've been sitting there, staring at the water, but my
back is beginning to hurt and I'm growing tired from crying, but the tears continue
to fall. I should just go home and go to bed, but I'm not ready to face my parents
yet. I lay back against the pier, looking into the sky. Its dark, but the sky is clear.
There is not a cloud for miles. It's beautiful glancing out at all the stars, shining
brightly. It's also a full moon tonight. A strange peacefulness begins to wash over
me, causing me to close my eyes. Clearly my mind is not in normal territory,
because I would never close my eyes late at night on a public beach. There are
too many creeps out there.
I couldn't have been laying there but what seemed like a few minutes. I
must have dozed off when, "Mind if I join you," flows through my ears in a deep,
raspy voice. My eyes pop open and a tall familiar face is standing over me,
looking down, with a smile on his face.
I begin to panic and sit up in a hurry, embarrassed. Embarrassment is a
rare trait for me and this guy has brought it out twice in one day. "I'm sorry, I don't
usually do this, it's been a bad night." I look back out at the water, gripping the
side of the pier, as if the most beautiful boy isn't standing behind me. Right then, I
can feel his breathing on the back of my neck, quickening my heart rate. In the
short time, he has managed to squat behind me, the inside of each knee resting
against my side.
He begins to whisper in my ear, "May I keep you company for a while? I'll
be quiet if that's what you need." His breath is so light, it tickles my ear. I can
barely breath, let alone speak, so I just nod. My head is fuzzy and I can't think
when he's this close.
He sits beside me and removes his shoes, placing his feet in the water. I'm
finally able to exhale the breath I've been holding. "How long have you been
here?" I turn and glance at him, to find that he's staring at me. I don't know where
this guy is from, I don't really care, but he's gorgeous. I never take an interest in a
guy, it's one of my few rules, but following rules have gotten me nowhere,
obviously. I'm not thinking clearly anyway, I guess I can break my rule and enjoy
his company for a while. He is leaving soon anyway and right now I need a
distraction from all this bad news.
He reaches out slowly, as if he's afraid I'll run away, placing his hand over
my cheek, rubbing his thumb underneath my eye, freeing it from the wetness of
the tears. Great, I have no idea what I look like right now. "I needed to clear my
head and came to the beach, I saw you standing by the water earlier, are you
okay?"
My eyes close at the warmth from his hand. I should be mad he followed
me, but I can't. I just want him near me, but no personal questions. I don't need
him to know me or what makes me tick. I don't need any complications. I open
my eyes to him staring at my lips. "Can we just exist together without trying to
obtain personal quota? Let's just enjoy casual company, two people needing
nothing from each other. Clearly you're not from here, meaning you'll be gone
soon. I'm not one of those girls that needs or wants to know everything about you
nor do I want to spill my entire life to you. We don't have to pretend with each
other, lets call this what it is. Can you do that?"
He just stares at me as if he's trying to figure me out, like I'm a book full of
secrets. He seems lost in my eyes, amused, confused, I don't know. We sit there
staring at each other as if we can't pull away. He doesn't say anything, just bites
his lip as if he's trying to answer his own question, or to make a decision. I'm
about to get up and walk away, when his other hand reaches behind my neck,
pulling me closer. His lips stop in front of mine, close enough to touch, when he
whispers, "Beautiful," and crashes his lips to mine.
His lips are so soft and full, but needy. His warm tongue slips through the
opening of my lips, requesting entry. Our tongues taste, touch, and dance
together. A moan, barely more than a whisper, escapes my lips. I run my hands
across his arms and up his neck, into the back of his hair. My heart is beating
wildly. Foreign emotions are running through my body. I have never felt this need
before, but it's as if my body needs more. Suddenly, I feel like I need to cross my
legs from the spasms down below. What is he doing to me? What does this
mean? He turns, laying me against the pier. He has one hand on my waist, the
other beside my head, holding his weight above me, like when we were at the
beach. He continues to kiss me, taking my bottom lip into his mouth, lightly
sucking. He makes a low growling sound from his throat. I'm not sure why until I
feel his need pressed against the bottom of my belly, making my eyes go wide
from surprise. Oh no, I can't go there. As if he can sense my panic, he stops. He
kisses me one last time softly and releases my lips.
He looks me in the eyes, a smile growing across his face. He brushes his
fingers through my hair, down my arm and grabs me by the hand, interlacing his
fingers with mine. "Nothing personal huh, I think I can do that." His lips brush
mine quickly before he moves back to his spot of the pier, pulling me by my hand
to sit between his legs. "I promise I'll be good for the rest of the night. I've just
wanted to do that all day."
I'm completely and utterly speechless. I have no idea what I'm doing. I
never do reckless or unplanned things like this. I have no idea who this guy is,
really, and now I'm sitting on the pier making out with him. I really need to get my
head back in the game. I always think everything through before I make a
decision. Being around him takes away my ability to process. Right now there are
so many unknowns, but what I do know is that I'm not ready for it to end just yet.

At first, she thought it was funny because editing was as close as she thought
she would get to the creative side of book writing, but then came up with a

Review

5 star! Let me just say when I started Nicole's book it was a breath of fresh air not every book has to be about sex or the millionaire meeting the helpless female not saying I dont love books like that;) Nicole writes about life and the struggles everyone faces on a day to day basis not everyone lives a carefree easy life people deal with pain, heartache, aniexty, depression and many more things and Nicole shows the pain and struggle we face but also the belief that everyone can heal and I thank her cause I related to every book in some way or another.  All who Dream is about Angela a strong brave mother who has been torn down and faced the worse. Angela is blessed in her life and things start to look up. Each one of these stories is about rising over he hurt one faces in life and the beauty of overcoming it!! Bravo Nicole you are truly a gift and I cant wait to read more from you.

Author Interview
1. I live in a house full of boys (one husband, two sons). I have naturally curly hair that hates humidity. And I LOVE Nutella pizza.

2. READ! Like as much as I possibly can. Last year I read just over 90 books, and wrote three full-length novels of my own. I am obsessed with words!

3.I almost always have a fluffy blanket on my lap when I write---it helps me think. So do yoga pants. I am pro-yoga pants.

4.I've been a storyteller since I was a young girl, but I started writing fiction about two years ago. I finished my first book, All for Anna in July of 2012.

5. I'm a hopeless romantic. No matter what genre I write in, there will always be a love story. It's a part of my DNA.

6. Ideas can spark from almost anything, but they tend to happen most when I'm outside, walking.

7.Anywhere that involves no children! I'm not too picky on location :) I love spontaneous overnight trips.

8.I wish I were a plotter. I have plot-envy, actually. I'm what they refer to as a "pantser", but I am trying to be more of a plotter these days. We'll see how that
progresses.

9. I LOVE TAHERAH MAFI. I want to be her when I grow up, although she's a few years younger than me, so I don't know how that works exactly. But she is my all time favorite author. Her writing is beautifully poetic. Read the Shatter Me series. It's AMAZING!

10. I didn't face many challenges with publishing as I went the Indie route. I've been very happy so far with that decision.

11. Honestly, I don't think I would change anything. I've been blessed with an awesome literary agent, Jessica Kirkland at The Blythe Daniel Agency, and great editors and beta readers...and fans!!! What more could I ask for?

12. Moths. Or flying bugs. Anything that can get caught in my hair. Eeewwww!

13. I have a book that I started over the summer that is about 65% complete. I hope to go back to it someday and finish it. It's a beautiful story, I just need a little boost of inspiration to finish it I think.

14. My newest release, All Who Dream, is a story about a single mom who has had some abuse in her past, but has lived in recovery for several years. All she desires is a safe and quiet reality...but when an opportunity strikes, she has to decide is she will take a risk and live her dream. And yes, there is a love story! Of course!

15.In All Who Dream there are many pieces of "real life" woven into the storyline. I have worked in recovery programs for a couple years now, and I have seen a lot of broken, hurting women. Angie Flores, my heroine, is a pretty realistic portrait of a woman who has walked through recovery and come out the other side of it. I also have several very close friends in my life who are single moms. I wanted to give them a "voice" through Angie. :) I hope I achieved that with this story.

16. The black moment. It's that moment when a character is at their lowest, when all hope seems lost and there is no turning back. I'm a very empathetic person, so I really "feel" those scenes, and though they are difficult for me emotionally, I feel that my best writing can be found in them.

17. The titles for all three of my books have been really easy to come up with. I'm not sure why. I wasn't planning on writing a series at first, it just sort of happened. I liked the idea of sticking with "All". So I did.

18. I just started a new two-book series. I can't say too much about it yet, but it's about sisters who share everything, including lies, love, and loss.

19. I'm projecting my next release to be in Spring of 2014.

20. Ya know, I love to work with broken characters. I imagine a lot more "issue-based" characters in my future, especially my heroines.

21. My toughest criticism I've heard so far is that "I'm too dramatic". I've heard that a few times. Oh well. I like writing drama, what can I say? My best compliment is that my characters feel real, like take-me-on-a-coffee-date kind of real. That makes my heart happy!

22. My most embarrassing moment is when I was snorkeling on my honeymoon in the Bahamas with my husband. I got freaked out by a few fish that touched my leg and ended up swimming like a torpedo to the shore. I beached myself in front of a huge audience. My swimsuit was full of sand. My husband loves to tell that story.

23. I would love to sat THANK YOU! Your shares, your messages, and your reviews have overwhelmed me this last year. Thank you for being a part of my dream, and for sharing in a piece of my heart. YOU ARE AWESOME!
