Synopsis:
Hell hath no fury like a selkie separated from his true love.
The gate to the sea creature realm is finally open. Rownan assumes the worst is behind him when he returns home after years of waiting to be reunited with his wife, Vienna. Only to find out that Vienna didn’t wait for him. She traveled to the evil realm of Harte years ago, hoping the legend of another gateway to Earth’s realm was real, but she was never heard from again. Rownan claimed he’d go through hell to be with Vienna, and now he must prove it.
Yara wanted to bask in the glow of her happily ever after in the magical realm of Rathe. She planned to explore Medusa and Poseidon’s world and dive deeper into her relationship with Treygan, but as the new leader of Rathe, her powers are needed to save more than one member of her own kind. Treygan vowed to always be Yara’s guardian, but long ago he also swore to go any lengths to protect his brother Rownan. Now, he must fulfill his promise to both of them.
Rownan, Yara, and Treygan are about to put their lives and souls at risk by traveling to the most dangerous realm of the worlds. Love should conquer all, but no one has ever conquered Harte.
Review:
“Dangerous
Depths”, by Karen Amanda Hooper, is the 2nd book in The Sea Monster
Memoirs series. Ok, right up front, I
haven’t read the 1st book in the series, “Tangled Tides”, and,
obviously it does help to minimize storyline confusion when you read the books
in order, but I was able to understand enough of the backstory while reading
“Dangerous Depths” to get a sense of the journey the characters had already
taken and still enjoy growth and the new direction Karen Amanda Hooper took
them to in this book. I personally, would
classify the genre of “Dangerous Depths” as a Young Adult, Fantasy, Adventure, Romance,
but the type of sweet Disney “love conquers all” kind of romance…the books are
based on fantasy characters such as mermaids and mermen, selkies, gorgons,
sprites, sirens etc. The beings have
access to the Earth realm and now, the home realm for sea creatures called
Rathe; unfortunately, they are also about to discover that a hellish realm of
nightmares, that was previously thought to be myth itself, is very real
indeed.
“Dangerous
Depths” revolves around Rownan desperately trying to find a way into the
hellish realm of Harte, to rescue his wife, Vienna, after he discovers that she’s
been trapped there for sixteen years, in a failed attempt to find her way to
him. The two main characters from “Tangled
Tides”, Treygan and Yara, are also very prominent in “Dangerous Depths” as well,
as they assist Rownan in his search for Vienna.
I very much enjoyed the adventure and uniqueness created by Karen Amanda
Hooper, not only in the actual storyline itself, but in how she wrote it from
the viewpoint of the various characters.
That being said, this is the first time that I’ve found myself actually
liking background characters more than the main characters in the book. The characters of Rownan and Yara just seemed
very self-involved and shallow. And it’s
not so much that I disliked Treygan, it’s just, for me, he just really didn’t
make the kind of “swoon-worthy” impression that I’ve come to appreciate from a
typical alpha male romance book character.
Now, the characters that I absolutely adored and found myself most intrigued
and impressed by were Nixie the Siren and the Sprites, in particular Jenna and
Keely. These characters, despite feeling
diminished in value as in Nixie’s case, or being one of the smallest of the
fantastical creatures in the realm, as in the case of Jenna and Keely, just
seemed to have so much more substance and inherent sense of loyalty than the
main characters in the book. It just
seemed that such overwhelming displays of inner strength, maturity and
selflessness should have come from the characters that were bestowed with the
massive amounts of power, additional strengths and abilities and not the
characters that weren’t given these additional gifts.
Overall, the adventure, the unexpected twists in
the plot and the uniqueness of the story still made “Dangerous Depths” a
wonderful read for me; furthermore the skillful talents and creativity shown by
Karen Amanda Hooper to reveal such a fantastic world are more than obvious
within reading the first few chapters. 3.5 Stars ~ Kathy
