Private Collins is just a few hours away from being deployed for the first time, to a particularly violent conflict. To say he’s nervous would be an understatement. In his last day stateside all he wants is a little bit of normal. What he finds is the kind heart and sweet spirit of Juliet Collins. She is by his side until the last possible moment, the moment when he asks her to write him while he’s away, promising to do the same in return.
Though Juliet is afraid to believe his promises, he holds true to them. Letter after letter after letter passes between the two of them…until one day the letters from Tim stop completely, leaving Juliet broken and grieving for the love she had found but would never truly have.
Juliet called out to Tim just as he reached the first step of the porch. “Tim!” she said, pushing the door open a little further and stepping onto the landing.
Tim stopped, turning back towards her, looking at her curiously. “Yes, angel?”
“Just remember, I’ll be here, waiting for your letters and waiting for you when you return,” she said, drawing a small, but playful smile from him, brightening his blue eyes.
He turned back fully towards her, crossing the porch in one step, wrapping his powerful arms around her once more, holding her close. His lips pressed to hers in one last kiss, full of hope and promise, full of need and passion, full of all that was to come. Finally when their lips parted, he murmured softly against her lips. “I won’t forget, angel. Just remember to wait for me.”
And with that he was gone, down the steps, through the gate, disappearing further down the street. Juliet watched for as long as she could see him, but he never turned back to see her. By the time she stepped back inside her door her eyes were full of tears, but her heart was full of something she wasn’t sure she’d ever had before…hope.
